âHey, buddy.â
Recker blinked, swearing he heard Spencerâs soft voice in the dark room. He turned over, looking for his mate, but the bed was empty. Recker reached over and clicked on the small overhead lamp, having to blink a few times as the room filled with light.
When everything came into focus, Recker saw Spencer standing by the bed, Bear over by the door. âWhatâs going on?â Recker asked as he tossed the covers aside and grabbed his jeans from the floor, pulling them over his legs and waist. âWhereâs Frisco?â
He didnât like the look in Spencerâs light-brown eyes. His best friend refused to look at him, strangling his fingers as he licked his lips. âHeâs gone, Recker. He called me and asked me to come get you.â
Spencerâs words werenât registering. Reckerâs eyes swept the room but he didnât see Frisco anywhere. He cocked his head at Spencer and then walked to the bathroom.
It was empty.
Reckerâs world spun out of control and he was finding it hard to breathe, to think, even to see. âFrisco!â
Spencer moved closer. âHeâs gone, Recker.â
Not even his best friendâs tear-filled voice was registering. Recker pushed past Bear and swung the motel door open, desperate to find his mate. He stepped out into the early morning light and knew his world was coming to a screeching halt. He began to hyperventilate, his heart racing out of control when not only did he see that Friscoâs bike was gone, but the Santiago brothers were waiting outside.
This couldnât be happening. He hadnât lost Frisco, no, no way. His body halted in pure shock and anger. Frisco had left him, had abandoned him.
Recker turned and slammed his fists into the yellow cinderblocks, becoming light-headed as he struggled to breathe. Where was his mate? Why would he leave Recker behind?
Recker was angry with himself, with Frisco, with how things had been growing between them. He hadnât known how to fix things, so they kept getting worse and worse. Recker had thought that winning all those fights would make Frisco happy, but the man continued to harp that Recker needed to go home.
Frisco might not have said those exact words, but that was how Recker had taken them. Frisco had been trying to get rid of him for months.
He wanted to hurt something, the world, the way his heart was hurting right now. Recker wasnât even sure how he was still standing because the pain was so damn unbearable.
It felt as if Recker was going black, his emotions spiraling out of control and taking him to a place he had been when his twin had died. It was a place of total darkness and void of any love or happiness. It was a place of pain and suffering and brutal violence.
âRecker?â Spencer walked out of the motel room, his arms wrapped around his stomach and his mate standing right behind him. âTalk to me, buddy.â
From the corner of his eye, Recker saw the Santiago brothers slip from their bikes and move in a little closer.
